This is the basis of the RYA YSS (Youth Sailing Scheme), for those under the age of 16 who want to learn how to sail. Following a national syllabus, sailors learn the basics required to safely helm a dinghy, with no prior experience required. Each stage is usually run over the course of 2 days. At Bowmoor, we run stages 1 & 2 as a four day course.
RYA Stage 1
This is where it all begins. On this course you learn the fundamentals of sailing a small dinghy, and gain your first sailing experience.
RYA Stage 2
Following on from stage 1, sailors develop a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor.
RYA Stage 3
This builds on the knowledge gained in stage 2, refining technique and gaining more valuable skills. This is equivalent to Adult Level 2.
RYA Stage 4
A focus on doublehanded sailing, where sailors will adapt and transfer their skills to sailing as both a helm and a crew.
This is the basis of the NSS (National Sailing Scheme), for those 16 and over wanting to learn how to sail. This follows a similar national syllabus to the youth scheme, at a slightly faster rate with a more in depth understanding of the theory behind how sailing works. Each stage is usually run over the course of 2 days. At Bowmoor, we run levels 1 & 2 as a four day course.
