Course Joining Instructions

Here are the Joining Instructions for RYA Sailing courses at Bowmoor Sailing Club.

About the club and your time training with us

Bowmoor Sailing Club is a members club, run by volunteers passionate about sailing. We very much hope that you enjoy your time learning to sail with us. We are a friendly, highly qualified RYA recognised training centre with the emphasis on having fun and learning.

Throughout your course, there will always be a Senior Instructor on duty who will oversee all training and a team of instructors or assistants who will teach you throughout the course. We hope that you will leave us having developed a passion for sailing, had a lot of fun and made some great new friends.

Useful info about the course

Timings – Our courses begin at 9:00am. Please arrive promptly to ensure you have enough time for changing. We have large changing rooms and hot showers available. The day will end at around 5:00pm.

Food – Our galley which provides hot food and drink as well as snacks is open during Summer both Saturday and Sunday until about 4pm. and on Sundays during the Winter  Alternatively, please bring a packed lunch and plenty of snacks. Boating can be quite intense so it is important to eat and drink regularly – there will be plenty of breaks where you have the opportunity to eat. . There are facilities available to make tea and coffee if you bring makings.

Equipment – We can provide buoyancy aids and helmets. No one may go on the water without a buoyancy aid. We also have a limited selection of wetsuits and wind proof splash tops but it is better and more comfortable if you have your own. These can be found relatively inexpensively at Decathlon, The Range, Go Outdoors, some supermarkets and online. You will also need footwear that can get wet; wetsuit boots, beach shoes or old trainers are ideal. Gloves and a woolly hat can be useful if it is cold. Sun hat, sunglasses and sun cream if it is warmer.   NOTE if you wear sunglasses or need to wear spectacles it is strongly advised you have a securing strap to avoid losing them in the lake.

Parents – Parents/guardians MUST stay on site for children aged under 12 and a nominated contactable adult must be within one hour for children 12-16. Although we don’t anticipate any problems the children can get tired and some may need more encouragement than others.

If you have any further questions about the course, please do let us know on training@bowmoor.com. We look forward to seeing you at the club soon!
