Commodore's Note

Bowmoor in the summer is always extra special and we really do make full use of our fantastic club and lake.  Our instructor team made it through the first week of youth and adult training, and they are back at it again this week.

Training is one of the main ways that new members join the club.  Assistant instructors start at the age of 14 and many of our dinghy instructors are 16 to 21; they certainly do a fantastic job and show Bowmoor for what it is, a family focused sports club.

Right now, we are looking for two members to join our Training Committee to support our training activities.  No prior experience is required, we volunteer on the basis of many hands make light work.  If you are interested then please find Nigel or me next time you are at the club (or drop me an email).

Last weekend we hosted Lechlade Lions 6th annual swim (OWLS).  Every year the Lions make a huge impact for local charities and we’re really pleased to support. Mike has kindly written this up below and I’ve added a few photos.  Well done to all involved for making this happen and joining in!

On a more serious note, every day last week we had some type of incident at the lake that diverted the attention of our instructors away from the safety of students to have to deal with friction from members who were breaking club rules.  As a member’s club we offer the most flexible rules of any lake in the Cotswold Water Park so it is disappointing. After careful review, the Exec Committee had to take the very difficult decisions to suspend some members.

All suspended members have been informed, but I’d ask everyone to review the summary of our rules here and apply them.  It really is the only way we can manage to share such a fantastic resource with so many members.

An exciting weekend is ahead, we have the Comet Open on Saturday as well as the Classic & Vintage Racing Dinghy Association Open on Saturday & Sunday.  I've been offered a boat and promised that it might even stay afloat for the whole event!  Lake access restrictions will apply, but as always, see the race officer who will be able to help you with getting on/in the water this weekend.

See you at the club!

OWLS ’24 – What an Event!

From Mike Read

Lechlade and District Lions are truly grateful for the use of the lake and the support of the club for this amazing event. Funds were raised for 4 charities, Lions, Prospect Hospice, Combat Stress and Healing Military Minds.

The event raised over £6k for these charities.

A special thanks go to the Bowmoor Rescue boat crews, Swindon Sea Scouts, FEST (first aid),  Hackets, Lakes by Yoo for their support and hard work. An extra special thank you to our Olympic Hero Cassie Patten ( now a club member) for hosting the day and motivating the swimmers!
A big thank you too for all BOWS swimmers for their continued  support of this event, we saw many people swimming competitively and even more achieving their personal challenges!
