Commodore's Note

The summer heat is here!

Last weekend’s competition at the WPNSA was fantastic, great weather, good wind but still eventful with both boat and human equipment failures. Nothing too serious, but Ellie M, William and Sarah were all forced to retire.  Congratulations to Ian Marshal 2nd Moth,  Ellie P. 2nd Byte CI, Josh 3rd Byte CI.  Josh also took the prize for youngest competitor in his first Byte competition.   Fantastic results and a great three day event, congratulations to everyone involved!

Next weekend the lake is closed on Saturday morning for the annual Lions Charity Swim.  The club is open as usual, but with so many swimmers entering the water it would not be safe to offer flexibility.  We’re anticipating more than 70 competitors so the club will be busy.  Normal access resumes from around mid-day but the timeline isn’t rigid due to stragglers and clean up.

Link to the event here.  I believe tickets need to be bought in advance.

For those that might like to join other Bowmoor sailors and support Sailability within the Cotswold waterpark, Whitefriars are recruiting! Details below for this very worthwhile cause.

See you at the club!

Simon

Safety!

In hot weather it’s always tempting to jump in the water through the day, remember that we split the use of the lake based on times.  Please refresh yourself on the club rules summary here.

An example of the types of issue: A member was allowing their child to swim without a tow float and outside of the swim area (after 16:30).  The child was diving under the water and there was a near miss with a boat.  The member believed their child did not need a swim float as they were an ‘elite swimmer’.  The rules are clear:

All swimmers under 16-year-old must always wear high visibility swimming caps, tow swimming floats and swim in close company with an adult capable of providing assistance if required.

The exception to tow floats does not apply to those under 16-year-old, and is only for participation in elite event training.  Supervising from the shore is not sufficient.

Clearly all of the other rules also apply, such as only swimming at the right times in the right places.

A further reminder not be in the water from 15min before the start of dinghy racing or formal training until 15 min after they have concluded.

Breaking of club rules will result in suspension and then cancellation of membership, there is an appeals process.  The rules have been carefully developed for everyone's safety and to allow maximum access to a shared resource.

Whitefriars Sailability Group are Recruiting

Whitefriars are actively recruiting more volunteers to support our Sailability sessions.  Roles are available for helms, buddy sailors, safety boat drivers and crew as well as a number of shore based volunteers too.

No previous experience is necessary and you don't need to be a sailor to get involved!  We are a friendly group and there is always a supply of cake and biscuits at our Wednesday and Thursday groups!

We offer training as well and regularly run activities to get everyone involved and develop their skills. Even if you can only help out occasionally we would love to meet you.
