Bowmoor Sailing Club
Bowsprit - 5th June 2024

Commodore's Note

Bowmoor Camp 2024 was another amazing week!  We had good wind all week, great racing and training every day, both exhilarating and exhausting.  So many people worked hard to make this happen, but I really want to thank Tash and Charlie who made every detail happen.  We ended camp with a fantastic BBQ from Karen and Marcus and then a disco into the early hours of Saturday.  Our hard partying sailors were out in force of the Yoo Regatta on Saturday, report from Sarah below.

Next weekend will be quieter, our youth team are at Whitefriars on Saturday competing in the next event in the Cotswold Waterpark Interclub Regatta series.

This does mean that Otters and Sprint racing can’t take place this weekend so has been cancelled.

The photo below is of Lucy and the Argonaughts from Friday morning when winds gusted up to force 6!

A final point is that we still do not have an OOD for this Sunday (9th June) please contact duty@bowmoor.com if you are available.  Many thanks.

See you at the club!

News and Events
Yoo Regatta

From Sarah Davies

The annual Yoo Youth regatta took place at Bowmoor on Saturday 1st June. This event took place after Camp where new skills could be put to use for the competitive racing.

Bowmoor welcomed a few guests adding to the competition in the Laser fleet and RSTera fleet.

The race had shifty Northerly conditions with wind funnels coming down the lake. Some sailors were lucky enough to pick up a wind funnel and get wonderful lifts while some patches were light.

The exciting new inflatable race buoys were used and might need to have better names than big tomato and the other three orange marks!  This led to a bit of confusion communicating the course but the lead boat helped direct the sailors around the first lap.

Result can be found on website. Toby Banbrook, our oldest sailor and race coach inspired the sailing in his Aero 7 with three bullets.

Alex Davies, sailing a club Laser Radial for the first time finished in a strong 2nd place after a gruelling 8 continuous days of sailing.

Ellie Pickard, sailing a Byte C1 was strong throughout the racing and secured third place, first female and First Byte.

Our visiting guest Daniel Windsor-Wilkin finished 4th in the ILCA 4 and will have another chance to compete against our sailors on 8th June at the Interclub Regatta.

The event was sponsored by Lakes by Yoo and at prize giving all competitors came away with generous recognition of their achievements.

A big well done to those that took part in the event with a few special mentions to Millie Nelson for competing in her first club race after the support she received during camp. We also saw an exciting new pairing in a Laser 2000 by Lauren Griffiths and Ellie Marshall.

The event was only possible with the support of volunteers and there was a team of 17 making this event possible.

Lark Nationals

From Rachael Jenkins

The Lark Nationals started as they meant to go on, with a fleet of 35 boats launching from Weymouth Sailing Club into a solid south westerly breeze that built throughout the day. Strong winds became the theme of the week with gusts of ups to 30 knots, many wet and wild reaches a fair few capsizes and one day lost due to the gales. The Larks love a gate start and we even did a practice on day one, followed by an incredibly long beat and some tightly fort battles around the triangle/sausage course. As the week progressed we experimented with line starts, this seemed to lead to several general recalls so we went back to gates! The class has worked hard to attract sailors across the ages, the socials included crabbing, a fleet dinner and fancy dress night. I sailed with my friend Emma an ex Bowmoor member, we ended up with a cluster of 7th and 8ths, and just one result in the top 5, leaving us 8th overall and First Ladies.

Weed Management

The lake has experienced a lot of weed growth this year with much of it breaking up and rising to the surface.  As proven by my recent capsize!  We’ll drag targeted areas of the lake on Saturday 8th in an effort to clear the worst.
