Bowmoor Sailing Club
Bowsprit - 22nd May 2024

by Simon Hinnigan

Commodore's Note

It feels like summer is here at last, Saturday gave perfect wind for member coaching and 2024’s inaugural Cruising Section meeting led by John Murrell.  Tom and Martin had our RYA level 1 adults confidently single handed by lunch.  Sunday continued with more great conditions and, if possible, even more sunshine.

The RS 30th Anniversary games was attended by 19 Bowmoor Sailors, report from John below.

Next weekend we have a visit from the Ukrainian Scouts and on Monday the Allied Dunbar Cup, registration from 09:30 and briefing 10:45.

Excitement for 2024 Bowmoor Camp continues to build, Charlie and Tash have done a fantastic job in bringing this together for the 29th.

Members BBQ: Don’t forget that we’ll end camp with a BBQ for all members on Friday 31st.  To buy tickets for the BBQ please click here (£8 adult, £5 children).

Youth Regatta: On the Saturday 1st June, we host the largest youth event of the calendar, the Lakes By Yoo Regatta  click here to register.  Sarah Davies has organised some fantastic prizes and every participant will win something.

Power cut: We’ve been told that there will be a power cut on May 28th between 08:30 and 16:30 while SSE cuts tree branches in proximity to overhead cables.  The club will be open as usual, just with no electricity/refrigeration/etc.

I’m taking holiday next week to join camp, so there will be no Bowsprit.  Hope to see you at the club and good luck to our GCSE and A-Level students!

RS 30th Anniversary Games – Hayling Island Sailing Club 17th-19th May

From John Banbrook

What a weekend!  In perfect sunny but challenging light winds, no less than 19 Bowmoor sailors from across the generations participated in 6 different Classes at the RS 30th Anniversary regatta at Hayling Island last weekend.  From the 21-ft RS21 keelboat to the 6-ft RS Tera Sport, and we also had interest in RS200s, 600s, 800s, Fevas and Aeros.  It was either end of the experience spectrum that provided our best results.  In the junior fleets, Jay B and Josh P picked up an outstanding overall 6th and 9th respectively in the 48 strong Tera Sport fleet, whilst Alex D and Jasper K came 10th in the RS Feva class (26 entries).  At the other end of the age ‘experience’ spectrum, Ian M came 3rd in the 17 strong RS600 fleet, showing Matt B and David N how to sail a proper boat…  Great practice for the last 3 ahead of their upcoming epic road trip to Lake Garda next week (race report to follow).

It’ll come as no surprise that our RS Aero sailors were right in the mix in the 6 and 7 rig fleets, with Sarah D posting an excellent 2nd place in R3 on Sunday.  In the RS200 fleet, Bowmoor had representation in 5 separate boats with Team Pickard in 3 of those!  Young Ellie, sailing with Chris H finished with the bragging rights ahead of her talented and more ‘experienced’ mum and dad…  Well done Ellie!

Everyone had an exceptional weekend of sailing and partying.  Let’s face it, Bowmoor knows how to enjoy a good party and it was here that Bowmoor excelled again with perhaps their strongest performance of the weekend (I may just be a little biased) – Andy S and John B both winning ‘significant’ prizes in the ‘most special’ shirt competition!  Once again a triumph of age over youth?  A challenge for the next Bowmoor tour?

Thank you RS and to Hayling Island SC for organising an amazing weekend.  Great weather, amazing sailing, premier league location and lifelong memories.  Full race results for each fleet can be found here

Fancy a piece of this?  Chichester Fed Week is 19th-23rd August 2024 and once again a Bowmoor posse will migrate South to HISC for what promises to be another amazing week.
