Last Thursday we hosted the Santa Splash for Healing Military Minds, contributing to the charity Combat Stress. I was pleased to participate and thank you to all who sponsored me. It was a bracing swim and I’d also like to thank the swimmers who came out to join in and make this a success. There are a few stragglers who are still to swim to complete their sponsorship and that will happen on Monday 18th at 12:00hrs – that may just tip the total over £2000!
Saturday was the preserve of hardy wind surfers who made the most of strong but gusty winds. For others we thought better of sailing, gathered in the Clubhouse, completed some maintenance tasks, discussed Club and worldly issues, and tested a porter stocked in the bar. I had a crazy idea of washing my car but realised that I’d be wearing more of the water than would hit the car.
Come Sunday, the wind dropped to make is a very cold but manageable Big Swim and as the morning proceeded the wind built up again but remained very gusty. If nothing else, it tested my new drysuit a few times (it worked). The Clubhouse was set up and decorated for the Christmas Lunch. The bar opened earlier than planned and just over 50 members (spanning 9 decades) gathered for the event. Thank you to Maria and team for the decorations, Hackett's for the food, and the relay of bar staff who kept the wine and beer flowing.
This weekend is the last planned sailing activity before Christmas, there is an emergent plan for a Christmas morning swim so look out on Facebook. We will run some form of ad hoc dinghy racing on Boxing Day to help work off the anticipated excesses of Christmas Day.
If you are still wondering about presents, there are sailing courses – guaranteed the right size!
