Bowsprit 21 November 2023
Commodore's Note

by Tom Whittingham

What a busy weekend, we hosted 40 young sailors from the South and Southwest Tera squads.   I was looking at the array of photos and videos on the Facebook page and I did not believe you could get so many boats in a such a small area or weave round those who succumbed to gusts.   Well done to our young sailors who participated and for the home team that made this happen despite the ever-increasing wind strength.  Judging by videos of the Club racing it was exhilarating conditions for all. A full report from the Joanna White the Tera Squad Captain is below.

The Aero End of Season Bubble is now a Bowmoor Only training event and bespoke activities for our members. This means the lake will be open for general use.

We are welcoming back winter members from Avon Sailing Club who must abandon their riverside venue over the winter months.  This brings us some really competitive sailors and old friends who have supported us over many events and winter seasons.

The main event of the weekend will be the AGM.  Please make the effort to attend.  The detail is posted below.

Christmas Dinner.  Please book your meals here.

Rats!

Thank you to the members who have reported rat activity (and sent photos) it has been very helpful. With Rentokill’s assistance we have blocked all suspected access points into the building. We have placed poison and traps around the building (out of reach of members).  Having worked on the critters inside, now the little darlings are waiting at the doors to be let in (please see photos).

As you can see it is important that we always shut the outside doors and do not wedge them open.  Please ensure that the doors close properly behind you. Unfortunately the wind can sometimes blow the door open just enough for a furry critter to creep inside, so be vigilant.   Continue to keep food stuff in fridges or locked containers and take away your food with you each evening.  Anything edibles left in the clubhouse in the evening will be disposed of in the large bins outside.

If you see or hear anything please report to clubhouse@bowmoor.com

Charity Plunge 7 December

Healing Military Minds (Part of Combat Stress) is holding a charity cold water plunge at Bowmoor SC on 7 December starting at midday.  While we may be used to a sudden or planned plunge into cold water, it is a no go ( on purpose) for many.   This challenge is a a great way to support those affected by combat stress either having been a combatant or tangled up in a conflict; sadly we don’t need to look far to see the effects.

Maybe this is something you want to arrange through work or just come down and support the event financially or by helping.  Contact me for the latter otherwise use the QR code.

Deep Cleaning

We have a cleaning company visiting the club this week, Wednesday to Friday, to complete a whole clubhouse Deep Clean.  They will be in the building during the day and in the evening - they will try to work around members, but this isn't always possible.  Please respect the areas where they are cleaning and stay out of the changing rooms when the cleaning signs are up.  The disabled toilet will be available when the main changing rooms are out of action.

Say No to Poo

Members and occasional stray dog walkers are placing poo bags in our outside bins. Please challenge anyone putting dog waste in our bins, we don't have the correct contract for the removal of dog waste.  Please take your dog waste home with you or pop it in the very large waste bin provided by YOO at their car park.

Tera Report
On the 18th and 19th of November, we welcomed the south and south west RS Tera winter training squads to the club. 35 children plus 5 from Bowmoor (who were invited by the class Association to join in the training), spent both days being coached by six of the National Tera coaches, the focus of the weekend was racing starts. There was a mix of theory and practical sessions on the water.  The atmosphere of friendly competition was fantastic and having the club so full at this time of year was lovely to see. The children all learnt new skills and developed confidence in what were quite tricky conditions, particularly on Sunday afternoon when racing had to be abandoned due to the gusty wind conditions. Despite this all the children told us that they were very keen to return next year for a further event. The feedback from our invited sailors was;

It was great fun, really nice coaches and people. I learnt so much and really enjoyed it.  Thank you.  Oscar

Archie (age 12). I really enjoyed my weekend of sailing with the Tera Squad! I was really stressed leading up to it though as I thought they would all be so much better than me so was really happy to see my Bowmoor friends there too!

The top 3 things I learnt and enjoyed most were sailing backward, the mini races and playing sharks and fishes in the crazy wind!

The best food was Hacketts lasagne, and one other great thing was meeting all the other young sailors! I didn’t know there were so many!

The weekend was great, and I now want to sail more - I tried to see if mum would let me miss school Monday to practice what I learnt but she said no!

Prior to the south and southwest regional training held at Bowmoor this weekend, Catherine was feeling quite apprehensive about the weekend, especially as the forecast was so strong. However, when she arrived, she was soon swept up with the others, recognising some faces from previous away events.  The training was organised where the 5 coaches had a set session and the children were grouped rotating in a carousel around the trainers, this had the benefit of all the children benefitting from the expertise of that trainer and they all learnt the same. The weekend was all about improving starts and new skills, such as trigger pulls, double tacks, hovering, backwards sailing and stop tacks. On the Sunday the wind picked up for more challenging conditions and the day started with follow my leader in their groups. Greater confidence was gained in the stronger winds until a capsize and the end to the day as dry suit failed. Catherine is more confident to give an event a go and travel with her boat.
