On the 18th and 19th of November, we welcomed the south and south west RS Tera winter training squads to the club. 35 children plus 5 from Bowmoor (who were invited by the class Association to join in the training), spent both days being coached by six of the National Tera coaches, the focus of the weekend was racing starts. There was a mix of theory and practical sessions on the water. The atmosphere of friendly competition was fantastic and having the club so full at this time of year was lovely to see. The children all learnt new skills and developed confidence in what were quite tricky conditions, particularly on Sunday afternoon when racing had to be abandoned due to the gusty wind conditions. Despite this all the children told us that they were very keen to return next year for a further event. The feedback from our invited sailors was;
It was great fun, really nice coaches and people. I learnt so much and really enjoyed it. Thank you. Oscar
Archie (age 12). I really enjoyed my weekend of sailing with the Tera Squad! I was really stressed leading up to it though as I thought they would all be so much better than me so was really happy to see my Bowmoor friends there too!
The top 3 things I learnt and enjoyed most were sailing backward, the mini races and playing sharks and fishes in the crazy wind!
The best food was Hacketts lasagne, and one other great thing was meeting all the other young sailors! I didn’t know there were so many!
The weekend was great, and I now want to sail more - I tried to see if mum would let me miss school Monday to practice what I learnt but she said no!
Prior to the south and southwest regional training held at Bowmoor this weekend, Catherine was feeling quite apprehensive about the weekend, especially as the forecast was so strong. However, when she arrived, she was soon swept up with the others, recognising some faces from previous away events. The training was organised where the 5 coaches had a set session and the children were grouped rotating in a carousel around the trainers, this had the benefit of all the children benefitting from the expertise of that trainer and they all learnt the same. The weekend was all about improving starts and new skills, such as trigger pulls, double tacks, hovering, backwards sailing and stop tacks. On the Sunday the wind picked up for more challenging conditions and the day started with follow my leader in their groups. Greater confidence was gained in the stronger winds until a capsize and the end to the day as dry suit failed. Catherine is more confident to give an event a go and travel with her boat. |
