The Supernova Open was hosted on Saturday with mixed conditions throughout the day with some boats stranded in no wind to races where the building winds provoked hiking. The race team managed to get the 3 planned races completed. Missing the overall results, I can only congratulate Chris Hobbs for his 3rd place overall. I was away with Simon Hinnigan and Nigel Fletcher at the RYA SW Connect conference in Taunton, and on our return, Simon was surprised with a party celebrating his 50th birthday. Sunday dawned with light winds again but by the time scheduled racing started we had brisk, gusty winds making for an exciting day afloat.
RYA Connect covered a wide variety of topics and the key points we picked up will be fed through to the committees. Much of what the RYA spoke about we already have covered within our governance framework and operations manual but there were a few things we should look at as part of ongoing reviews of how we are running the Club. The SW region has bucked national trends with a growth of 0.5% whereas nationally participation fell by 0.5%. Our growth over last year exceeded the SW average and we are one of the bigger clubs within the region and have a robust financial base.
It is very autumnal now. The water temperature has dipped below 8⁰C and the trees and shrubs around the lake have a yellow-orange hue. Walking over grassed areas I left wet footprints; the ground is sodden. Please remember we should not be taking vehicles onto grassed areas and into the boat park from now until the Spring. |
