This has been the wettest and windiest RIAT weekend for a long time. It probably put a few people off coming to the Club and it certainly hit RIAT attendance and reduced the traffic a little. The ground held out for those who braved camping unlike some to the temporary local sites that turned into mud-baths as people arrive on Friday. The wind strength reduced the Under-the-Smoke races to three hardy Aero sailors. Two races were enough before, joined by a few more they planed up and down on screaming reaches. On countback David Lynall took first place from Buzz Keck with Phil White coming in third place.
The weather conditions also saw events in Cheltenham cancelled and we were lucky to get a late offer to host the band Alex Davies plays in – Refuge. They played for us in Saturday night receiving a very enthusiastic reception from a crowded Clubhouse. I’m sure we’ll see them again! Sadly, we did not get the pizza service we had expected but their absence the Galley stepped up to the challenge to feed the masses. The second barrel of Stroud Ale was soon exhausted in the early evening and the party mood continued past midnight. Sunday was not so breezy and the rain showers less intense and frequent. It was however still very shifty conditions and proved challenging for many. The race team were able to stand down early since there was only one sailor wanting the third race of the day.
The pressure on the Club facilities were evident over the weekend,; well done Dave and the Glley team and must also thank those who helped clear up. However there are two major points to make:
- First, the Galley is a counter service. You order at the counter, collect your food and drink there and equally import, return your used crockery etc to them on the trolley by the galley. Help them to be able to serve you.
- Second, there is not a washing-up/tidy-up fairy living in the members kitchen. You need to clear up after yourselves, wash up and put away the things you have used, and thrown away your rubbish. Do not expect other members to clear up after you, your children or guests.
All said, a most enjoyable weekend! |
