Hello Bowmoor Sailors and Swimmers!
Watch out: One of our Cormorants has become very defensive lately and attacked and then followed a swimmer across the lake last week (read Sue's update on the BOWS facebook group). Sue thinks she might have set a world record while swimming away! In all seriousness, keep a watchful eye near race mark 8, avoid the area if possible for the time being. We've been in contact with the conservation and wildlife team at Cotswold Lakes Trust and their advice is: the Cormorant is a protected species and the behaviour is normal when they feel a food resource is under threat. The bird will likely calm down once it no longer has dependent young to feed, which will be quite soon.
We've only had one other incident like this, reported some time ago, so being cautious and avoiding going near Cormorants should work. Sue clearly did the right thing and got out of there as quickly as possible.
Club Security: We're increasingly noticing that members are leaving the metal gate open when there is no-one on site and leaving locker rooms open and unlocked. Please don't do this. It only takes a few seconds to close and lock, or unlock and open. We have had items stolen this year, lock up so your kit isn't taken as well. It doesn't matter what time of day it is, if you are the last to leave lock everything.
Camp: I've been on holiday for a could of weeks so have not had the chance to properly thank Charlie, Tash and the whole instructor team who made camp so much fun and run so smoothly. You really did make it look easy, and it truly isn't. You again proved what makes Bowmoor so great as a family sailing club.
Speaking of great - many thanks to Graham Fletcher for organising the member training for Adults and Youth. I think we're basically full for the year with coaching for 5 different groups every other Saturday. Just fantastic to see so much progress from our Sailors.
Open Day: The final thank you this week goes to Rosemary Dillworth, who delivered such a fabulous open day on Saturday. Rosemary would say that it's a huge team effort, and it was, but it still needed someone to pull everyting together and Rosemary did an exceptional job. The start of the day looked like a disaster with a poor forecast and the road closed due to a fallen tree from 7am. However, everything came good and by the end of the day we'd had 50 new sailors of all ages out on the water, some joined Bowmoor immediately (photo below).
Rosemary asked me to thank everyone for helping deliver a successful day for Bowmoor and the local community. Well done, what a great day!
There are always things to do & organise at Bowmoor SC, so if you'd like to join in as a volunteer then please drop me an email commodore@bowmoor.com and I'll connect you with the right team :)
Happy Swimming and Sailing!
