Tomorrow, May 15th, is Bowmoor's 20th Anniversary at the Lake. Moving the club from Bowmoor Lake (leased) to Coln Park Lake (which we own) was a huge effort and transformed the Club's future. Twenty years on and the club is a great success thanks to members at the time and all those since who have volunteered and worked hard to make the club what it is today.
In 2025, many sailing clubs are struggling, Bowmoor should feel proud of the community we have built around the club.
Mike Hing very kindly sent over the text that was published by David Gibbons in Yachts & Yachting and included the photo of the first sail:
Sunday 15th May (2005) saw the opening of Bowmoor's new home - a new lake and new facilities less than a mile from the "old" Bowmoor.
Annie Epps won the honour of opening the new lake together with a magnum of champagne, while Paul Dorer and David Rollinson took to the water first in one of the Youth Fleet RS200s.
Club Commodore Peter Mackenzie welcomed the members to the new facilities and thanked everyone for their hard efforts to make the "Opening Day" possible. In particular, two individuals were singled out since without their efforts the move would not have been possible. Don Cannon, Honorary President and previous Commodore, had been responsible for starting and following the project through to completion, after many setbacks. David Rollinson had managed the construction and been responsible for making the new facilities actually appear.
As for the sailing, there was an excellent turnout. David Rollinson had even organised wonderful weather, though the light winds proved to be very shifty and many took their first swims.
Thank you Mike!
This coming weekend we have Member Coaching on Saturday. On Saturday 24th we have the first Ladies Who Launch and Cruising Saturday. We've also a request for extra support on the Come & Try day, June 7th, as it's proving to be very popular. Thanks to Rosemary Dillworth for leading this event.
Good luck to our Tera Squad this weekend, Jo White continues to do a fantastic job keeping our youth Tera Squad busy representing Bowmoor across the region!
Finally, I'd like to ask for volunteers to form a club inductions rota. Inductions are held at 09:30 on the first and third Sunday of every month, please drop me an email (commodore@bowmoor.com) if you would like to help welcoming new members to Bowmoor!
