Bowmoor Sailing Club
Bowsprit - 2nd October 2024

by Simon Hinnigan

Commodore's Note

Saturday’s Byte Inlands still felt like a summer event, sunny and warm, but the variable conditions gave tricky sailing through the day.  We only just held onto a fourth race as the wind eventually fell away to nothing.  Rick Whitehouse (Combs SC) took top honours adding the Inland championship to his nationals win at the WPNSA earlier in the year.  From the Bowmoor Byte squad, Sarah Hinnigan was 1st Byte CI and Josh Pickard 2nd CI, Josh O’Mahoney took 2nd Byte CII, and Grace O’Donnell was 3rd Byte CII.  Alex Davies delivered two strong CII second places but had to drop for the final two races, and Cairen Griffiths sailed well in her first Byte competition.

Autumn was clearly here on Sunday and club racing peaked with 36 boats on a single start, by the 3rd race we had gusts over 25kts and while the gybes were tricky the reaches gave big smiles.  The Wind/Wing surfers went straight out as racing ended.  It was a great day on the water.  Results here.

Please take note of John’s advice on boat berths, the ground is soft and wet right now, do check your boats and make sure they are properly tied down.

I also want to thank the facilities team, led by Mike, for their hard work and persistence in making our solar power supply a reality, Mike has a brief update below.

Finally, we’re getting ready for the annual membership renewal, please read Doug’s membership section and take action.

News and Events
Boat Berths

From John Murrell, Boat Park Manager

As Autumn & Winter approach, we can look forward to a series of storms & high winds. Now would be a good time to ensure your boat is tied down correctly. If your mast is up, it should be restrained. There are a dozen or more boats in the boat park not tied down, risking expense and damage to adjacent boats.

Membership renewal

From Doug Roberts, Membership Secretary

We have now sent out a renewal email to all the people with a current annual membership. If you have not received one then check your Junk mail and then please contact membership@bowmoor.com

Please renew before the 31st October to claim your discount. We have a large waiting list for membership and we will not be able to guarantee that you will be able to renew after 31st of October. To save on postage etc we will not be sending out any paper renewals.

To help the Duty system run smoother please ensure that the data on your membership form is up to date.

This includes:

  • An up-to-date personal email address for each member – many families only use one and then the duty emails all go to that one address causing lots of confusion and time wasting.
  • A mobile phone number for each (adult) member – allows the OOD to contact their duty team
  • Year of Birth for each member (01-01-yyyy)– this helps us remove under 16 years olds from being invited as well as ensuring we accept volunteers from over 70 year olds but do not chase for an obligated duty
Solar Update

From Mike Dyer, Vice Commodore

It seems a long time since we discussed installing solar power on the Boat Shed roof at last year’s AGM.  I am pleased to say that we now have all the arrangements in place.  We have secured a grant from Cotswold District Council, covering half of the costs, which we are extremely grateful for.  We also now have agreement from the local grid operator to our design, which is to put solar panels on the whole south facing roof.

We are just finalising the dates, but the installation will happen at about the end of October.    There may be a little disruption, as scaffolding will be up for 2 or 3 weeks, but we will minimise the impact on Club activities.
