Bowmoor Sailing Club
Bowsprit - 3rd July 2024

by Simon Hinnigan

Commodore's Note

Another spectacular weekend at Bowmoor.  We welcomed the RS 200 Open back to Bowmoor SC after a 20 year break, David Nunn did a cracking job as race officer.  The wind was very challenging as it didn't settle all day and the windward/leeward course often flicked from run to a beat on the same leg!  Ian Pickard has kindly written up the event and been published in Yachts and Yachting here with some great photo’s by Dave Fewings.

Sunday racing provided more wind but no more stability in direction than Saturday which gave some challenging (read frustrating) racing!  Many thanks to Tom for stepping in as OOD.

Next weekend we have the long anticipated 10hr race, complete with after party, BBQ and bouncy castle.  You can still enter here.  The racing starts at 11am, arrive early, register and pick up your hull numbers.  The galley will be open as normal, which means it closes at 16:00, please remember to pay your tabs before they have to leave for the day.

Maria has written up the weekly Hour of Power below.

Finally, Paula is asking for your support as she is raising funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance; please sponsor this excellent cause!

See you at the club!

From Paula Dagnall

Having not cycled more than 5 miles before I was quite naive in agreeing to this and thinking I could do it. As it is for the air ambulance, I will take on this challenge!

Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a charity that provides an essential Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) across Wiltshire, Bath and surrounding areas. It needs to raise Β£4.5m a year to continue saving lives, but is not directly funded by the Government and receives no National Lottery funding, so relies on generous public donations.

I am taking part in this event as a member of the Aspire Networking Group who are immensely proud to have Wiltshire Air Ambulance as the selected charity in our Swindon group. On July 13th we will set off from the Stratton House Hotel and head down to the WAA base at Semington for our lunch stop, returning to complete our 100 mile charity fundraising ride.

I have cycled to Bowmoor sailing club from Swindon a few times and on Sunday I managed 80 miles, so I now know what I’m letting myself in for and its going to be tough!

If you would like to sponsor me, the link is below. Your donations will encourage me enormously and all money goes to a great local cause.

Every small amount makes a big difference :-)

Hour of Power (HOP) on Sunday Mornings

From Maria Hinnigan

An hour of learning on the water with Bowmoor's own coaches.   We will support your young sailor whatever their ability from level 2 onwards.

  • Haven't sailed in a while and need some extra support - Developing Confidence.
  •  Confident with boat but needs a few pointers to get to the next level - Starting to Race.
  • Regular racers who wish to have company to race against - Race squads.

Student should be rigged and ready for a briefing at 9:15.

On the water 9:30-10:20.

Debrief until 10:30.

Parents should be ready to support rigging, launching / recovering boats and supporting the coaching team by being in the safety boats.  Wear appropriate gear.  We can keep the price low when parents volunteer to help.  It's Β£5 per session - run every Sunday during term time.

Here is some recent feedback from HOP:

Amazing and very good this morning Maria, Huw really enjoyed it, Will was great. - Victoria

Thanks Maria, it was a great chance for Isaac to get back into things and practice skills at his own pace but with guidance. Really helped boost his confidence! - Rachel

Great session this morning, Joe loved it!  He's feeling more confident and already looking forward to the next HoP! Thanks Maria πŸ˜€ - Ceri

Sign up here for the next two Sunday's sessions.
