Bowmoor Sailing Club
Bowsprit: 26th June 2024

by Simon Hinnigan

Commodore's Note

I hope you are all enjoying the excellent weather this week?!  The long days and warm evenings haven’t always given good sailing wind, but have been great for SUP, kayaking and swimming.  Cruising section, Social Sailing and the very popular Ladies who Launch had a great day on Saturday.  Maria has written up more Ladies Who Launch details below with dates for the diary.

Next weekend we’re hosting an RS200 open on Saturday, so there will be some restrictions in place, speak with the race team on the day.

July 6th is the 10 hour race, I know many teams are being formed, please register here ASAP.

Looking further ahead, be ready for RIAT, details below.

Finally, huge congratulations to James, pictured below, who completed his first ever race last Wednesday evening in his Optimist.  It’s great to see our younger members joining in club racing!

Sailors: please give attention to the Dutyman update below.

See you at the club!

Simon

Dutyman

From Alastair Stagg

We need your help.

There are some unallocated slots in next few weeks and months and grateful if people are able to volunteer to cover these

  • 30 June (Sunday)                     OOD
  • 7 July (Sunday)                        OOD
  • 18 August (Sunday)                 OOD
  • 26 August (Sunday)                 Safety Boat Driver

Please contact duty@bowmoor.com if you are able to assist.  Remember that with no duty cover we have no racing and the same old backups cannot just keep stepping in.

Ladies Who Launch

From Maria Hinnigan

What is ladies who launch?  We are a friendly welcoming group of ladies, who enjoy a bit of sailing to work up an appetite for cake (and Prosecco).  All levels welcome, we can rig up some two handers if you fancy crewing.  We can offer 1:2:1 coaching if you need that extra helping hand. Or you just need to dust off the cobwebs but still have your sailing legs.

Here is the feedback from the last session:

A huge thank you from me too. Really grateful for your generosity with time and patience getting me back in a boat and for making me feel so welcome. For anyone else lurking in the shadows thinking this is only for experienced sailors it really isn’t. Hope to see you all again soon (August date in my diary!). ⛵️ - VICKY

Ditto, it was a wonderful day and great company. Special thanks to Maria for the extra encouragement (and patience) to go out for a second attempt. It made all the difference, I really enjoyed it! Looking forward to the next LWL 😀 - CERI

Dates for your diary.

  • July 13th
  • August 17th
  • September 14th

RIAT Weekend, 19th to 21st July

The Royal International Air Tattoo is possibly the busiest weekend at the club each year.  We regularly get non-members coming into the club so the main gate may be locked to enhance security from Friday 19th onwards and throughout the RIAT weekend.  Don’t forget your keys!  We will be conducting membership and guest checks and ask for your support.

There is no pre-booking needed for camping but we will ask you to collect a ticket to attach to your tent or van unless it is already showing a Bowmoor membership sticker.

You may bring guests, but only within the limits of one family or 3 individuals.  Guests will need to pay for a temporary membership of £5/night per adult if they camp overnight.

RIAT introduces a complex route plan in and around the area including temporary one-way systems, so it is worth checking their website to see your best route in and peak times to avoid a frustrating journey to the Club.

Training

Bowmoor is an RYA training centre and offers fantastic opportunities to learn new sailing and power boating skills.
