Commodore's Note

I think I heard the Met Office say that it has been the hottest June on record although we have had some rain and thankfully some breezy days.  It provided for some fabulous racing on Sunday and capsizing was actually refreshing.  Let’s hope that lasts through to the weekend and the 5-hour Race.

Ah yes, the 5 Hour Race is this coming Sunday and it is preceded by a party on the Saturday night.  That party is open to all members, and we’ll be striking up the barbeque so you can cook your own supper and enjoy some music and the bar.  Spectating on Sunday will also be entertaining as teams will be conducting relay changeovers on the water just in front of the Clubhouse.

Over the last weekend we have conducted membership spot checks and also through the boat park.  There are a still a lot of unmarked dinghies, windsurfers, canoes and trailers. Many of these languish within a tall grass and weed screen.   Please get down and put your 2023 stickers on your kit and do the essential maintenance on your berths.   We will start disposing of kit that appears to be abandoned.

News and Events
Five Hour Race - 2nd July

Entry is open for the 2023 edition of the Bowmoor Sailing Club 5 Hour Race; please sign up by close of play tomorrow. The 5 Hour Race will be held on Sunday 2nd July 2023.  To enter you need to have a team of at least two helms or crews racing the single boat.   There is a change-over gate established just in front of the Clubhouse which makes for entertaining viewing and crews must change over at least three times.     Visitors are welcome to compete.  Enter here.

Support assisting the  recording during the race would be welcomed – offers to treasurer@bowmoor.com

There will be a party on the evening of Saturday 1st July to make sure you are feeling fresh and relaxed for the race!  As mentioned above the barbeques will be glowing for you to cook your own fayre and the bar well stocked.

RIAT Weekend

The RIAT weekend is always a busy time when many Family Members enjoy camping at the Club.  There is no pre-booking needed be we will ask you to collect a ticket to attach to your tent or van unless it is already sporting a Bowmoor membership sticker.

You may bring guests but only within the limits (one family or 3 individuals).  They will need to pay for a temporary membership of £5/night as they would on any other occasion if they camp with you overnight.

The main gate will be locked throughout the RIAT weekend to enhance security.

Youth Training

We have been able to secure two RS Tera Association training sessions for Club members from the one of the UK’s leading coaches, Caitlin Morley.  Caitlin is an experienced Tera, Feva and 29er sailor and South West Region Coach who can really help our sailors exploit the RS Tera.  Places will be limited, booking in advance will be key as it will not be possible to join the session on the day.

Caitlin will be at Bowmoor on the following dates:

July 8th & 9th

September 9th & 10th

The cost will be £40 per weekend.

Camping Protocols

When can I camp?

You can camp on grassed areas between 1 April and 30 September.  Caravans and campers may also use the car park hard standing October to Marsh. Pods cannot be occupied in January.

You may only stay on site continuously for a maximum of 10 days (unless otherwise licenced).  Tents and caravan cannot be left on site unoccupied.

Guests (adults) must pay a £5/night temporary membership fee, at the bar, to comply with planning permissions.

Where can I camp?

You may camp on the grass fields surrounding the club within club grounds.
Please check the ground before driving onto the grassed areas and do not drive onto the grass in the winter months (November to March inclusive). The water table is very shallow, and the ground can be soft; you are likely to damage the ground and probably get stuck. If you damage the ground, your must make repairs.

Camping facilities

There are no facilities for mains power in camping areas, nor should any vehicle be connected to the Club power supplies.
Potable water taps are situated at the western end of the clubhouse and boathouse.
There is an outdoor washing up area at the back of the club house.
There are fridges and limited freezer capacity in the clubhouse. Please remove ALL your food at the end of your stay.
The members’ kitchen is available for washing up and limited cooking (microwave). Please do not use the boiling water tap for filling kettles etc; it has a limited capacity and is there to make hot drinks. If you use the kitchen, please tidy up after yourself.

Security when camping

The main gate should be locked before sunset. Please note that the gate must be kept locked during major events such as RIAT.
The clubhouse should be locked overnight unless there are 5 or more families camping on site. When the clubhouse main door is left unlocked, the foyer light should be left on. If in doubt, lock the gate and clubhouse (all members have keys).

What about my rubbish?

Ideally take your rubbish home with you after our stay. The clubhouse bins are only for waste from The Galley or meals eaten in the clubhouse or on the decking.
The external bins are for dry recycling and landfill waste, please use the appropriate bins if you really need to dispose of waste on site (left-over food, cooking waste and dog waste are NOT dry-recyclable items). We pay for this service so please compact tins and especially plastic bottles to avoid bulking out the bins.
